I purchased the Otis Tactical cleaning kit (not from Amazon -- got a better deal elsewhere at the time) to care for two 12 gauge shotguns, a pair of .22 cal target pistols, several .38 cal and .357 magnum revolvers, and several 9mm and .45 cal pistols. From its advertising it seemed like the perfect "one size fits all" cleaning kit. But it does not live up to the hype.

This kit does come with some basic tools to clean all common types of guns, including the needed slotted tips and bore brushes. But it does not have the (optional) picks and brushes needed to do a thorough cleaning. That will cost you another $15 or so. Only a small number of patches come with the kit, so you should plan on buying more right away. Interesting, no one who sells these cleaning kits locally in my area also sells the Otis patches. So I had to purchase those online (which I did buy from Amazon). The patches cost about 10 times the amount you would spend for common square patches. Even... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME! i will nevr go back to cleaning with rod based kits, January 26, 2010

The otis cable based cleaning kits are head and shoulders above any rod-based cleaning kit out there. Ideally, guns should be cleaned moving the patch smoothly from the chamber to the muzzle, which is impossible to do to some guns using a cleaning rod. The otis kits make it easy to draw the patch through the barrel smoothly and cleanly without any risk whatsoever that the metal cleaning jag with scrape against the bore. The jag is always safely surrounded by the soft cotton patch. This is of course not the case with a rod based cleaning set. When using a cleaning rod, it's very easy to get the patch stuck or have the patch shift to one side of the jag so the jag is being dragged against the bore. This of course can be very damaging to your bore, which is completely unacceptable, especially when you are a cleaning a delicate or expensive firearm you are attempting to preserve. When you pull the otis cable through the bore, as long as you use a properly sized patch, the pull is always... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice kit, May 7, 2010

Ok,so I bought into all of the OTIS hype....and it is a good kit. But really you would do better to buy a couple of the brushes and one flexible rod to clean your weapons. The solvents work ok, but Hoppe's seems to work better. It is handy to have when traveling, but I don't think it's worth investing for a home kit.
