I thought '78-82?!? didn't good jazz die in the early 60's? didn't fusion send most jazzbos to the unemployment line? then i heard, by chance, disc 7 of this box. it din't take more than a few tracks to send me straight to the local used cd shop with a stack of old zeppelin and ac/dc cds. what you get here, in short, is over 30 albums worth of digitally spuced up tracks that seem to be guided from above. think everything from finger poppin' beatnik style bop through the wildest impulse era blowin' all cooked up into one mind melting, overwhelming collection. all packed in nice big 12x12 box for easy transport to the desert island of your choice. the book inside features full color reproductions of all of pepper's galaxy albums, plus a groovy mini-bio and complete session info. Fantasy really laid it down on this one, I put this 'long side the MINGUS, MONK, and EVANS sets. that, my friends, is sayin' something. 18 of 21 people found the following review helpful: Indispensable, This review is from: Complete Galaxy (Audio CD) The intense beauty of Art Pepper's music lives forever. This collection has many extra tracks not found on the separate Galaxy releases. The amount of music you get is almost overwhelming, but then so is the music itself. Art Pepper was the greatest! 11 of 13 people found the following review helpful: Fantastic music from an unknown giant of jazz, By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Complete Galaxy (Audio CD) Many jazz musicians don't get the recognition they deserve, and Art Pepper is one of these players. The music is classic jazz: bebop, classics, ballads, and even music with strings, although I really didn't like Bill Holman's arrangements, it certainly doesn't detract from the fact that this man was a genius, and, in my opinion, the best recordings from this man are at the end of his life: this recording, and the complete Village Vanguard sessions, which I will be purchasing soon. This set is 16 CD's--not 9, and it's expensive, but worth it, and this collection and the Vanguard sessions, in my opinion, compare with the greats of jazz--it is that good.
