This box is the first in a two-part series of all of Vivaldi's published instrumental music. There were twelve volumes in all, numbered consecutively by his publisher as opera 1-12. None of this bears any relationship to the order of composition, or even the quality of the music, although most of it is first-rate Vivaldi. Rather, it reflects what the composer had on hand, and what the publisher thought would actually sell. The music consists of sonatas for solo instrument with continuo (harpsichord and cello) accompaniment and concertos--generally for violin and string orchestra. Included in this first box are the famous Concertos op. 3, subtitled "L'Estro Armonico," which Bach found to much to his liking (he arranged several for keyboard). All of the performances, by I Musici, are first rate. --David Hurwitz

I Musici has long time been a famous interpereter on Vivaldi's music. And as this box set shows, they are definitly the authority. Vivaldi wrote hundereds of concertos, almost in some same style. But in between I Musici can distinguish the subtlety and delicacy of every piece. The result is a full and clear delination of Vivaldi's concerto, with correct style and atmosphere. The acoustics is a bit over-echoed, but is well-balanced. (After all I finished listening this 10-cd box, it took me over a month.)

There are some who opine that Vivaldi's concerti and chamber works are simply variations on a theme, that he simply repeated himself. When Philips put out these discs, I "liked" Vivaldi but cannot say that I appreciated him. This ten disc set and its companion (Vol. 2) have changed that. I have loved listening to them over and over again. It is only when you listen to the many different works in succession that you begin to appreciate Vivaldi's genius. These are simply superb recordings.
