Amazon.com Review

Whether your needs are accurate curved cuts, resawing or just straight cuts, you'll be pleased with this Wilton bandsaw, because it handles all those tasks like a pro. With a full 6 inches under the blade guide when fully raised (you can add the optional 12-inch riser if you choose) and 13-1/2 inches from the blade to the frame, capacity is no problem, letting you easily create tight curves in plywood or resaw oak or maple.

Assembly is fairly quick and easy, aside from a little heavy lifting, and involves mounting the cast-iron saw frame to the lower steel cabinet and aligning the pulleys. The closed cabinet is well-machined and solid as a rock.

The table tilts for beveled cuts with a 45-degree range to the right and 10 degrees to the left. It's easily done, but we'd like to see the under-table gauge enlarged for readability's sake. And each time you tilt the table, be sure to reset the table leveling mechanism when setting it back to 0.

A 3/4-inch blade on this machine does a superb job of resawing, with almost no vibration. With a 1/8-inch blade mounted, tight-radius curves are no problem. Blade changes take a bit of time and effort, but that's the nature of the band saw.

The miter gauge slot is a standard size, letting you upgrade to a super after-market gauge if you choose to. We like this saw because of wide speed range, enabling you to cut a wide variety of material in addition to wood: plastic, Bakelite, composites, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. To change speed, you'll have to move the clutch and reposition the drive belt, not a difficult process. Doing that gives you options that range from 40 feet per minute for steel up to 3,000 feet per minute for wood.

And while this isn't a huge feature, we still want to mention that we appreciate the way Wilton's surround the power-on button with a molded guard so it can't be turned on accidentally.

The dust chute is a nice addition, and connected to an extraction system or vacuum, does a darned good job of keeping the mess to a minimum. In all, this is an extremely well-made, hard-working that saw will serve you well if you take care of it.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

I already have the Powermatic wood bandsaw, I bought the Wilton to use strictly for metal, this one is quite capable for both, but personally I would rather have separate, dedicated machines. The quality is that of the Powermatic, since both are from WMH Tools and probably made in the same factory (Taiwan). These saws are packed very well, I had no damage. It went together quickly (less than 1 hour) and ran perfectly with only minor adjustments to dial it in. Its too bad they don't include the blade tension quick release like the Powermatic, that was an additional expense for the Carter release, but this is not a must for some people. As for the operation, so far has been great. I leave the high speed belt off as I will only be using the low speeds. The saw has 8 low speeds but you must switch the pulleys from the motor to the gear box which gives you 4 speeds one combination and 4 the other. There is no way to get the low speeds without the gear box on this saw, I heard of some... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Wilton wood/metal band saw, March 5, 2010
This review is from: Wilton 8201K 14-Inch 1-Horsepower Metal and Wood Cutting Bandsaw, 115-Volt 1-Phase (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this as an addition to an existing cheap 10" Ryobi wood band saw. I needed a saw to cut metal prior to working with it on my metal lathe and milling machine in a home shop. I also use it to do wood work. The Ryobi was a surprisingly decent saw with some nice features despite the cheap price. Although it had light constuction it had a nice table extension, quick tension release and ball bearing guides in back and sides of upper and lower guides, it even has a LED work light. But there is no way you would want to use it for metal cutting beyond ultra light duty on aluminum.

The Wilton is an expensive tool compared to other similar capacity band saws...but that is because it has a very high quality gear case and belt system that allows you to have at least 8 speeds. This ranges from a very low speed of around 60 fpm to 3400 fpm. This lets you cut just about anything you can feed it. You can cut up to 6" thick material although you can get a riser that increases this... Read more

This is the first bandsaw I have purchased but I find it an excellent choice and it has met or exceeded the capabilities/specifications stated by the manufacturer. Very functional with the optional accessories for both metal and wood!
