3D Technology Checklist

This product is 3D-related. To help you get a great 3D experience, use our checklist below to ensure that you have everything you need. If you have any questions or want to learn more about 3D, we invite you to visit 3D 101--our center for everything 3D. To get started with 3D, please ensure that you have:

A Display

The first--and most important--item you'll need is a 3D-ready display--whether it be a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays usually have a higher processing power than older models as they need to display one image for each eye to create a 3D effect.

A Source

While your display is ready for 3D playback, you still need a device to read 3D content (i.e., a movie or a show). This source can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3.

Content

In order to watch 3D, you will need to get some 3D content. This 3D content will come from the source mentioned above in the form of a 3D program, movie, or game. Please ensure that your 3D movies are in the Blu-ray 3D format, as this new format will provide the best 3D experience.

3D Glasses

All 3D HDTVs on the market require Active Shutter glasses to create the 3D effect. You will need to buy one pair of glasses for each viewer. Also make sure that the Active Shutter glasses you buy are compatible with your display--for example, buy the glasses from the same brand as your 3D HDTV.

HDMI Cable

To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu-ray Disc player) to your display, you'll need a hgh-speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation--with bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second)--will be able to carry the 3D signal without any loss of quality.

Frame Sequential Technology: Full HD Signals for Each Eye

The method used to send left-eye and right-eye 3D images viewers is key to the 3D image quality, and Full HD 3D uses what's called Frame Sequential technology. The GT25 series plasma display panel allows images for each eye to be alternately reproduced at the rate of 60 frames per second (fps), making a total fps for both eyes. Viewers watch the images through high-precision 3D Eyewear (not included), which open and close the left and right shutters in synchronization with the alternating images. As a result, a separate 1920 x 1080 full-HD image is sent to each eye. This addresses the image quality problems and blurring that were common to earlier 3D systems, and creates sharp, crisp 3D images.

The Frame Sequential Technology requires images to be displayed at 1/120 of a second--twice as fast as ordinary full-HD images. If the luminescence time for each frame were simply shortened, the screen brightness would be lowered. To solve this problem, panasonic shortened the luminescence time and raised the luminescence intensity, to keep things bright and detailed.

Crosstalk Reduction Technology: Clear 3D Display with Minimal Afterimage

As mentioned above, the Frame Sequential technology shortens the luminescence time for each frame. If the pixel afterglow remains unchanged, the previous image will remain as an afterimage when the next image is produced. Newly developed fast-decay R and G phosphors reduce the afterimage time to 1/3, to ensure 3D images are displayed with no visible afterimage.

3D Eyewear: High-Precision Shutter Control Sends Clear Images to Each Eye

Highly precise control completely closes the shutters for both eyes at the instant that the images change for the left and right eyes. This masks unwanted afterimages to enable clear and comfortable 3D viewing. Eyewear sold separately.

Infinite Black Panel

A new panel and improvements to the cell discharge area dramatically increase contrast when viewing in brightly lit locations, as well as reducing the electrical pre-discharge that causes graying has greatly enhanced black gradation. As a result, deep, rich blacks are displayed in virtually any viewing area, from living rooms to bedrooms. Even in dark film scenes, fine textures such as on clothing, are clearly reproduced.

Get a wealth of Internet-delivered content with VIERA Cast, from Netflix to Skype.
VIERA Cast: Great Web Entertainment, Home Video Conferencing, and More

The age of the Internet TV is well underway, and VIERA Cast's assorted online content keeps getting better. In addition to the popular content such as YouTube and Picasa Web Albums, it now offers Pandora Internet Radio, movies streamed from Netflix (paid service), exciting sports from FOX Sports, tweeting web communications with Twitter, and even home video and audio conferencing with Skype. It also provides USB terminals for a keyboard and Wireless LAN Adaptor. (No PC required; Skype function requires an optional communication camera TY-CC10.)

THX Certified Display: Real Film Experience

THX reproduces film images as the filmmakers intended them. The overall aim was to improve the experience of cinema-goers and faithfully recreate the audio and visual ambience that filmmakers intended. To receive THX certification, TVs undergo stringent tests to determine, for example, whether the exact same brightness and color are displayed at all screen locations, and whether black levels satisfy standard criteria. VIERA meets the high standards set by the THX Certified Display Program.

600Hz Sub-Field Drive: Crisp, Clear Moving Pictures

600Hz technology lets you view superb full-HD motion and still images with 1,080 lines of resolution. For even greater clarity with motion images, Panasonic uses its own unique image-analysis technology. This technology converts the motion in each scene into dots. And each frame is practically displayed for a shorter length of time than in previous systems, to reduce aftereffects.

VIERA Image Viewer: Easy Viewing of Full-HD Photos and Videos

It's easy to view full-HD images with the SD card slot. Watch and show your photos and motion images right after you take them. Simply insert an SD Memory Card into your VIERA HDTV to display photos and full-HD videos on the large screen. You can also choose from among 5 types of background music and 5 display effects. It's much more fun when you can view them on a large screen HDTV with family and friends.

VIERA Link: Operation With a Single Remote

For those who own multiple VIERA devices--VIERA Link allows interconnected operation of various AV devices using only the VIERA remote control, by simply connecting compatible devices to each other by an HDMI cable.

x.v.Color

x.v.Color is the new standard in high-definition color, which delivers up to 80 percent more color than standard HDTV for breathtaking realism and vivid, natural colors.

VIERA Tools

With the new VIERA Tools user interface, simply press a button on the remote control and icons such as the photos or movies from the menu screen. Now you can just select the one you want. This kind of easy operation means you have more fun and less hassle.

The Next Level of Video Gaming

Take your team to the championship and your gaming to the next level. A specialized Game Mode helps ensure fluid and seamless gameplay by minimizing time lag when displaying game images. With Game Mode turned on, you get the motion resolution and enhanced details you need to win. And don't worry about racking up all those long hours playing; anti-image retention technology and a remarkable 100,000 hour panel life ensure that your VIERA HDTV will still run smoothly and beautifully long after you score the game-winning goal.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

  • THX Certified 41.6-inch plasma HDTV panel with full 1080p HD resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio
  • Full HD 3D sends a separate 1920 x 1080 full-HD image to each eye, for sharp, crisp 3D images
  • Infinite Black Panel includes new filter technology for deep blacks and vivid images with minimal reflection
  • Enjoy VIERA Cast Internet TV services such as Netflix and Skype with wired (included) or wireless LAN connection
  • 3 HDMI, 2 composite with audio, 2 component with audio, 1 analog audio, and 1 PC input; USB and LAN ports
  • Full HD 3D sends a separate 1920 x 1080 full-HD image to each eye for sharp and crisp 3D images

There is just so much to love about this TV.

My last TV was a 32 inch Magnavox LCD. Picture was exceptionally bright, but HD channels looked great connected via component cable. For some reason, HDMI would not work with my cable box and that TV. While picture was bright, darker colors left much to be desired.

I ordered this TV and got it in 2 days. I must say, I was pleasantly suprised by the freight carrier, Pilot. They actually arrived earlier than my stated time, ehich worked out well because I was home. The box had not a mark on it. When I get packages from UPS or FedEx, it looks like they've played soccer with the packages. The box was in excellent condition. The delivery guy carried it by himeself on his shoulder up to my apartment.

It took maybe about 1/2 hour to unpackage and set up, and connect my cables. Though it's suggested to do this with a helper, I was able to put together and lift myself. It was a bit on the heavy side, but it... Read more

My Experience

I have a THX, non-3D Panasonic plasma(2 years old); a Sony XBR non-LED LCD(4 years old); a low to mid-level Sony LCD (1 year old); Samsung's top of the line 3D plasma (current model), and several smaller Samsung LCDs (1-2 years old); and a couple of smaller Sharp LCDs (4-5 years old).

Comparing plasma to LCD, at least the older or non-LED/non-dimming, LCDs is like comparing apples to oranges. All of my LCDs have matte screens; they don't reflect much ambient light and work well in moderate to brightly lit rooms. The drawback is that the blacks just aren't very black. But to be honest, 95% of the time, I don't even notice. The non-3D plasma performs well in dark rooms; fantastic blacks and contrast but suffers from ambient light glare. If the scene is dark, the screen turns into a mirror. I use settings found on various sites for specific models (CNET, AVS Forums, etc.). The only deal breakers I've experienced are light bleeding/flash... Read more

I've had this TV just a little over a week, and I couldn't be happier. I'm definitely not an expert, but the picture clarity/quality looks amazing to me. 3D works well. Like the other reviewer, I also love how many ports the TV has, and combined with the easy to use on-screen input menu, it's the most convenient system I've had.

If you order this TV with the 3D package and Blu-ray Player, make sure to buy the HDMI cable at the same time. The 3D won't work without it, and the Blu-ray player comes with the RCA cables only.
